Mirrors are a very important part of your bathroom design, and experience is essential to determining the right fit for your needs. At Palo Alto Glass we use our 33 years of experience to help you design your custom mirrors to achieve the desired effect. Used properly they can expand a room to look twice its actual size; poor design can result in reflections you may not have expected. Mirrors can help bring light into an otherwise dark room or hallway, or reflect a nice outside landscape. They can have simple polished edges that make them more room-expanding and less noticeable, or custom beveled edges for a more framed, elegant look. We can cut around lights and outlets for countertop to ceiling installations and supply mirrored trim plates for a finished look.
Mirror starts out as ordinary clear glass, usually ¼” thick. It is first coated with a reflective backing, then protected by a second layer of paint. Up until about five years ago copper was always used in the reflective backing, making it susceptible to oxidation commonly called “black edge”. We now use a copper-free product that won’t deteriorate over time, and we can warranty it for a period of ten years. In the past mechanical fasteners such as clips around the edges were used to fasten mirrors to the wall; advanced high-strength adhesives have now taken their place. These new adhesives make your mirrors look better, and are much safer because in the event of breakage the adhesive will hold most of the mirror to the wall rather than letting it fall in large pieces.
